UNIT 10

AUDIENCE

SCRIPT TO SCREEN

For this unit we are creating a short film as a group. We were given a script which we analysed and watched some films to inspire the style (Amelie and Wes Anderson films). We then used this to develop a target audience and then create a treatment as a group. We are being given specific job roles during pre production, production and post production which I will research below. We will eventually screen the whole film to an audience at college.

Here are the types of roles we may encounter:

Pre-Production:

  • Director: Responsible for the overall creative vision of the film and leading the creative team.

  • Producer: Handles the business side of things, such as securing financing, hiring crew and cast, and managing the schedule and budget.

  • Screenwriter: Writes the screenplay, which serves as the blueprint for the film.

  • Production Designer: Develops the visual style of the film and oversees the art department.

  • Location Manager: Finds and secures suitable filming locations.

  • Casting Director: Finds and selects actors for the roles in the film.

  • Storyboard Artist: Creates visual representations of the script to plan out the shots and scenes.

Production:

  • Director of Photography (DP): Oversees the camera and lighting department and works with the director to achieve the desired visual style.

  • Camera Operator: Operates the camera and captures the footage.

  • Sound Recordist: Captures clean and clear audio on set.

  • Gaffer: Sets up and adjusts the lights.

  • Grip: Helps the camera and lighting crew set up equipment and move it between shots.

  • Production Assistant: Provides general assistance on set, such as setting up and cleaning up.

Post-Production:

  • Editor: Selects the best takes and assembles them into a coherent film, working closely with the director.

  • Sound Designer: Creates and mixes the sound effects, music, and dialogue for the film.

  • Colorist: Adjusts the color and tone of the footage to achieve the desired look.

  • Visual Effects Artist: Creates or enhances visual effects, such as adding computer-generated imagery.

  • Titles Designer: Creates the opening and closing credits and any other on-screen text.

We watched Amelie and some videos about auteur Wes Anderson to inspire the style of our film. This helped us to develop our target audience and plan the production of our own film.

AUDIENCE THEORY

USES AND GRATIFICATION THEORY

Formulated in the 70’s by Blumler & Katz it considers WHY people watch/play/read the things they do suggests that people are not just sponges, but make choices.  They use the media …

Audiences engage with media for 4 potential ‘gratifications’;

1.Diversion / entertainment

2.Personal relationships / Social  interaction

3.Personal identity

4.Surveillance / Information

Stuart Hall - AUDIENCE RESPONCES

-->Preferred

-In agreement with the intended message

-More likely if you are part of target audience

-->Oppositional

-In disagreement with most messages & representations

-Likely if you are NOT in the target audience

-->Negotiated

-In agreement with message overall

-But challenging some aspects

JOB ROLES RESEARCH

Video assist operator:

Video assist operators are primarily there to assist the director, and script supervisor. But they also work closely with first assistant directors.

Key Grip:

They set up equipment. As soon as the camera rolls, they anticipate all the camera moves and deal with the unexpected or directors changing their minds.
