UNIT 1-4
photography
INTRODUCTION
This is my photography unit. Here we cover different styles and techniques of photography and also the research behind it.
This is presented in our own findings with the photos we take and also research into other photographers to present their techniques.
LOGISTICS OF PHOTOGRAPHY
SHUTTER SPEED
EXPOSURE IS THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT REACHING A PHOTO SENSITIVE SURFACE; EITHER FILM OR A SENSOR.
SHUTTER SPEED REFERS TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME THE SHUTTER IS OPEN, AS THE SHUTTER SPEED CHANGES, SO DOES THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT REACHING THE PHOTO-SENSITIVE SURFACE.
CHANGING SHUTTER SPEED ALLOWS YOU TO CONTROL THE SHARPNESS OF MOVING OBJECTS IN PHOTOS.
AS A SIMPLE RULE OF KEEPING CONTROL OVER THE SHARPNESS OF THE SUBJECT ALWAYS KEEP THE SHUTTER SPEED HIGHER THAN THE FOCAL LENGTH.
SLOWER SHUTTER SPEEDS ALLOW YOU TO BLUR MOVING OBJECTS OR THE ENTIRE IMAGE IF NOT TAKEN ON A TRIPOD. THEY CAN BE USEFUL FOR DARKER PHOTOS. EXTREMELY LOW SHUTTER SPEEDS ARE USED FOR THINGS LIKE STAR PHOTOGRAPHY.
DEPTH OF FIELD DEPICTS HOW SHARP THE IMAGE IS, FROM BOTH IN FRONT AND BEYOND THE POINT OF FOCUS. THIS IS PRIMARILY CONTROLLED BY APERTURE, A LOW APERTURE PRESENTS A SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD, WHILE A HIGH APERTURE SHOWS A LARGE DEPTH OF FIELD. THIS CAN FOCUS THE PRIMARY PART OF THE IMAGE ON ONE OBJECT OR ALLOW THE WHOLE SCENE TO BE IN SIGHT.
APERATURE
AN APERTURE IS AN OPENING THROUGH WHICH LIGHT TRAVELS TO THE SENSOR IN A CAMERA.
APERTURE CONTROLS THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE IMAGE THAT PASSES THROUGH THE LENS AND FALLS ON THE IMAGE SENSOR. DEPENDING ON LIGHTING AND DISTANCE FROM THE SPECIFIC SUBJECT, APERTURE ALSO INFLUENCES THE DEPTH OF FIELD IN AN IMAGE.

Landscape
Ansel Adams

Anson Adams was an American landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his B&W images of the American West.
He helped found the Group f/64; an association of photographers advocating 'pure' photography which favoured sharp focus and the use of the full tonal range of a photograph.
Edward Weston

Edward Weston was a 20th century American photographer. He has been called 'one of the most innovative and influential American photographers'.
Edward was the first photographer to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship and over the next two years he produced nearly 1400 negatives with his 8x10 view camera.
Jem Southam

Jem Southam's detailed works document subtle changes and transitions of the South West English landscape.
His photography presents the cycles of life and death throughout spring and winter.
Joe Cornish

Joe Cornish is a British photographer noted for his large format landscapes.
From 1986 to 1955 Cornish was responsible for either all or the majority of the photography in more than 30 travel books.

Street - Photoshoot
I did this shoot with the intention to expand my photography portfolio.
My plan for this shoot in specific was to get street style photos of my sister, the secondary focus is the fact that she is presented with a skateboard in her photos what represents part of her personality and something she enjoys.
This was a very cold late shoot.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY
Alec Soth

Alec Soth is an American photographer, based in Minneapolis.
Soth makes "large-scale American projects" featuring the midwestern United States.
The focus of this image is of course the man in the middle of the frame. He is shown with planes in his hands which represent a passion and he is brought out of the image as a focus by the large depth of field.
Portraits - Photoshoot
I did this shoot with the intention to expand my photography portfolio.
My plan for this shoot in specific was to get close up portraits of my cousin Tommy Hatwell. The first image I present shows him with his hobby and something he enjoys which is an element commonly used in portraiture.
These photos were taken in a cafe in Tavistock.
