UNIT 7
Interactive Magazine
Introduction to InDesign
This is the beginning of our new unit: Interactive Magazine, our first task was to learn the basics of Adobe InDesign and create both a magazine cover with multiple animations and also a sweets recipe magazine with 4 pages and various effects.

These two magazines were created to introduce us to InDesign. The magazine on the left presents just a cover with different animations and effects while the magazine on the right presents a recipe magazine with multiple pages and text wrap. They're both relatively simple just so they can introduce us to InDesign without having to be overally creative.
Sweets - Test Shoot

We did a studio test shoot of products such as sweets to present how we can take photos in a studio setting and what lighting technique.

Lighting Test shoot

This was a test shoot on subject photography and videography, the photos present different lighting levels and positions in the studio creating different effects and dimensions to the set. The video presents different lighting strengths and positions in a 3 point lighting set up.
Magazine research - pt.2

Video Research

Fast paced video representing the food and the recipe.
Presenting the food in a close up camera angle - mostly bird eye view or high angle shots.
Smooth transitions maybe assisted through physical elements
Designing a logo for a magazine - Illustrator

I made a large page in Illustrator to demonstrate the potential logos I can make for my branding.
I present different colours based on what looks good and research into other magazines. I also experimented with different fonts and small details such as drop shadows. Towards the top of the page I was experimenting with italics and gradients.

Page Plan

Advert Page - Canned Chopped Tomatoes

Above was a screenshot of the front of the chopped tomatoes can vectorised on the side of my artboard in illustrator before being separately saved into individual assets.

Above is a screenshot of the tomatoes vectorised and then sized up before being saved as an individual 'ai' illustrator file. The benefit of making the vector so large is that when its placed into InDesign, the quality of the image will be maintained. The same was done to the other assets used on the advert page.

Above is a screenshot of the entire vectorised can.
I vectorised the image in a low fidelity as it made it obvious its some form of digital art rather than a photo however it still maintains detail that it is obviously a can.
Of course I did move around proportions and changed certain shapes to make it look as it does above.

Pancake Page

Above is a screenshot of the final completed 'Pancake' page in my magazine.
I decided to keep it relatively simple and straight forward to make it a good accessible page.

Above is a screenshot of how I achieved the background for the page. I vectorised the image of pancakes to a high fidelity like the kind of graphic imagery what would be used in a cooking book, and then made the background a light mix of blue and grey so its not as harsh as a white.
At the time of designing the background I hadn't decided where the placements were so I made the background colour fairly large so the vectorised pancakes could be moved around anywhere on the InDesign page without weird edges or cut-offs
Pasta Bake Video for 'Simply Food'

Woodland Cooking for 'Simply Food'

The video was filmed remote out in the woods and the recipe was made by one of my friends who are studying a catering course at St Austell college.

A-Roll was filmed on a Canon 80D filming in 1080p 50FPS mounted to the Crane V2 gimbal.
B-Roll was also filmed on the same camera and a DJI Mini 2 filming in 4K 60FPS.
Photography was on a Canon 80D with 24mm lens in RAW then edited in Lightroom, image was mostly impacted by masking.
Pasta Bake Video 2 for 'Simply Food'

Pancake video for 'Simply Food'

A-Roll for this video was filmed with a Canon 80D filming in 1080p 50FPS fixed to tripod.
B-Roll for this video was done handheld with an iPhone 12
Pro Max filming in 4K 30FPS. I filmed it in 4K to allow extra room for reframing the shots as the iPhone's lens scope is fairly wide unless zoomed in.
